Tools Expertise
Authoring Tools - Also known as authorware, are programs that help you write hypertext or multimedia applications. Authoring tools usually enable you to create a final application merely by linking together objects, such as a paragraph of text, an illustration, or a song. By defining the objects' relationships to each other, and by sequencing them in an appropriate order, authors (those who use authoring tools) can produce attractive and useful graphics applications.
Controlled Language - Represented by such formal specifications as AECMA Simplified English as well as vocabularies developed and used by individual companies and industries, is a growing method of dealing with the demands of language translation and use by differing audiences.
Controlled language is highly effective in its use, it presents the writer with a well defined authoring task, writing in a tightly controlled vocabulary, often with as few as 800 basic words and tight controls on terminology/grammar.
Terminology - These are usually concept based monolingual or multilingual databases defining standard terms used within a company, a domain or an industry. Terminology extraction tools are used to create terminology databases. The consistent use of multilingual terminology is vital to ensure consistent cross-language and cross-cultural branding.
Multilingual Keyword Search - This enables users to identify information available in their own or other languages, based on one or more key words. Ideally synonym identification and processing is included.
Localisation Tools - These tools are specially designed to support translators localising software user interfaces. Most of these tools offer functionalities such as resource editing, translation memory, leveraging (re-using), validation, spell checking, preview and resizing of graphic user interface elements in software.
Translation Memory - TM tools allow translators to recycle translation units from previous translation projects (source and target language texts) by automatically proposing a relevant translation from the TM. The proposed translation can either be an exact match, when an identical source language segment occurs again in the work; or a fuzzy match as a similar source language segment is found in the work. TM tools usually include a set of translation support tools, such as terminology management, word processing, editing and quality control tools.
Machine Translation - MT is the process of rendering text in the source language into text in the target language using complex computer programs without human interaction. There are rule-based, statistical and hybrid machine translation systems.
(Multilingual) Information Retrieval - This means searching a body of information for objects that match a search query and display the result.
Summarisation - Such tools provide fully automated or computer-assisted summaries of key information provided in any type of language content, usually a document.
Semantic Web Services - Comprise self-contained, self-describing, semantically marked-up software resources that can be published, discovered, composed, etc.
Research and Development

The Language Technology Centre co-operates with the European Commission, acting as evaluators of EU proposals and as reviewers of EU projects. LTC participates in several EU research and development and market validation projects. The first project was called IMPACT and led to a new product, the LTC Communicator. In addition, the AMBIENT project took place from August 2004 to July 2006, the EUCAM project started in May 2005, and the ALADDIN is running from August 2005 until July 2007.
LTC consultants continuously monitor the latest developments in all major language technology research laboratories across the world: in Europe, the United States, Canada and the Far East. We evaluate the major language technology products available world-wide, and we pioneer and close gaps by developing our own solutions when required.
